How to Refuel Your Boat

In practice, refueling a boat isn’t that different from filling up your car’s gas tank. However, there are a couple of extra complications that you need to keep in mind. This guide from Arrowhead Yacht Club and Marine will tell you step by step how to safely refuel your boat.

Safety Precautions

Liquid marine fuel and fuel vapors are very dangerous. All it takes is a single spark to set them ablaze. For safety’s sake, shut off any and all electrical equipment before you begin the refueling process. Minimize fuel spills by checking to see if your boat’s hose lins, engine fittings, and strainers are all still intact. You should also close any doors, windows, and hatches on your boat so that fuel vapors don’t have a chance to get inside.

Fuel Type

There are dozens of different types of marine fuel available on the market. However, not all of them will be compatible with your boat’s engine. If you’re not sure if a particular type of marine fuel can be used in your vessel, check your owner’s manual.

Tank Size

It can sometimes be difficult to get a read on how full your boat’s fuel tank is just by looking at the fuel gauge. Listen for a distinctive sound to tell you when the tank is close to being full. If conditions around the loading dock are too loud and you’re not sure if you’ll be able to hear the sound, keep in mind that you don’t necessarily have to fill your fuel tank all the way. Just give it your best estimate.

Handling Spills

Spilled marine fuel should be cleaned up using an absorbent pad. While dish soap will be able to remove the stain, it will also cause the fuel to sink into the water and become an environmental hazard.

Before Leaving

Before you leave the refueling dock, take care to make sure that no fuel fumes are still lingering on and around your vessel. Open the doors, windows, and hatches to let any fume escape. Some vessels are equipped with a boat blower to better dispel fuel fumes. Before you leave, check the bilge and engine one last time. If you can smell fumes, it’s not safe to leave yet.
