Preventing Seasickness on Your Boat

The dreaded plague of seasickness, known by the French as “mal de mer,” can strike anyone on a boat at any time, even the most seasoned mariner you know. Seasickness is a form of motion sickness that occurs due to an imbalance between the inner ear and your senses. While it’s a major nuisance, there are some strategies you can use to prevent this malady in yourself and your boat passengers.

Eat Lightly

It might seem counterintuitive when you’re feeling nauseated and lightheaded to eat, but eat you must! A big heavy meal isn’t advisable, but a light snack can do wonders. Having some food in your stomach will help to prevent nausea from getting worse and it’s much better than starving yourself for hours while you’re on the boat. Saltine crackers, bananas, applesauce, toast, and granola are all good options.

Try Herbal Remedies

Using herbs like ginger and peppermint, provided you aren’t allergic to them, is quite safe and can be effective without the need for stronger medications. Sipping on a ginger or peppermint tea or having some candies in these flavors can help to settle your stomach.

Avoid Alcohol

Finally, another helpful tip is to avoid the use of alcohol for a day or two before your boating excursion and particularly while you’re on board the boat. Alcohol is dehydrating and can make you feel dizzy, both symptoms that can contribute to your nausea.
